Cumbria's Talented Athletes

As the countdown to London 2012 draws ever nearer, the release of the first grant payments from Cumbria Talented Athlete Fund have now been made. Five athletes have now received thier grants from the Performance Fund and Twenty Six Athletes have benefited from grants from the Potential Fund.

The Cumbria Talented Athlete Fund has been created as part of the sporting legacy of London 2012 to support Cumbria's most talented athletes. The fund is being supported by Cumbria County Council, South Lakeland District Council and Allerdale Borough Council and is being administered by the Cumbria Sport Partnership.

The Fund has been developed to assist those performers who are or who have the potential to achieve national and international recognition in their chosen sport. As such, the Fund has been divided into two streams; the Performance Fund is for athletes already competing at national or international level, and the Potential Fund is for those young athletes aspiring to perform at national and international level.

"This is a real step forward for the talented sports performers of Cumbria, I'm sure the Fund will benefit those elite performers already operating at the highest levels, and also provide some much needed finance to those aspiring Cumbrian performers looking to get to the next level."

Brendan Jameson, Leader of South Lakeland District Council and Chair of the Cumbria 2012 Group
